The University of Melbourne: Sara Dörings Australienerlebnis

"I first came to Australia because of the kangaroos and the endless beaches but I discovered the University of Melbourne campus, which I instantly loved, and  I had a closer look at the website.

I was delighted to find I could take four different subjects from different disciplines each semester! The whole concept of the Bachelor of Arts was a real revelation to me, encompassing so many subjects I was interested in: Suddenly it was possible to combine Philosophy with Politics and Environmental Studies and even take, say, music as a breadth! This was exactly the sort of flexibility I wanted.

Even though applying for University in a foreign language may sound somewhat scary it turned out to be the easiest thing in the world.

Student support goes far beyond the accessibility of the website (even though this turned out to be an important point in student life!). During transition and orientation period I found myself surrounded by all sorts of useful information ranging from essay-writing-briefings to housing services. The wide array of services was clearly impressive – for example there’s the Academic Skills Unit, where you can book individual tutorial sessions to get your essays checked for grammar and style, a service that I believe is absolutely essential for non-native speakers.

Another thing that thrilled me was the vivid social life at the University of Melbourne. There were two days during orientation when all the clubs and societies put their stalls up. It was just too much to chose from and soon I found myself being torn between joining the Environmental Collective, the Skiing Club (yes, you can go skiing in Australia!) the Chocolate Lovers Club, the Flare-dancers or all of them at once. Realizing that I may need the time to do some study during semester, I finally went for the Debating Society and the Australian Youth Climate Coalition, both of which turned out to be a great way of getting to know likeminded people and doing something useful while having a wonderful time. Even more importantly though, the existence of all these social happenings (I will never forget the castle built of beer-boxes, that one day suddenly appeared in the middle of South Lawn) makes campus a place that may well feel like a second home. And that’s a good thing, since I found myself spending quite a lot of time there during semester!

As for the study itself I soon found that, like the application process,  it was not half as scary as I had imagined it. Yes, this creature called essay is a rather new thing for a German student, but Australians have to learn how to write academic essays too. The lectures were well taught, interesting and easy to follow and so were the tutorials.  I hardly ever noticed the English language as being a barrier at all.

At the end of my first semester at the University of Melbourne I’m glad of the kangaroos and endless beaches that brought me here first!"
