Die Geowissenschaften widmen sich in grundlegender Ausrichtung dem Studium der Erde: Die Erforschung des Materials, aus dem sie besteht, die Erkundung der dynamischen Prozesse auf unserem Planeten, wie diese auf Materialien einwirken, wie zum Beispiel tektonische Prozessen, die zu Vulkanausbrüchen und Erdbeben oder der Erzeugung von Mineralien oder Wasser in der Erdkruste führen. Eine wichtige Rolle in den modernen Geowissenschaften spielen auch paleo-historische Ansätze. Forschungsprojekte in den Earth Sciences sind darüber hinaus richtungsweisend für das Verständnis des Klimawandels und damit für die nachhaltige Gestaltung von gesellschaftlichen Transformationsprozessen. Von entscheidender Bedeutung ist auch hier der Einbezug innovativer Technologien. Für die nationalen „Research Priorities“  soil and water oder resources bildet das breit aufgestellte thematische Spektrum der Geowissenschaften eine essentielle Basis.  Als globale Wissenschaftsdisziplin wird internationale Forschungszusammenarbeit besonders groß geschrieben.

    Project Description:

    Our research is helping growers overcome salinity, soil toxicities and nutrient limitations; enabling adaptation to drought and climate change; protecting crops against plant pathogens; and ensuring sustainable improvement of crop yield and quality. Plant-breeding programs have produced more than half of the commercially grown grain varieties in southern Australia. We deliver outcomes of direct significance to both the Australian and global agricultural industries by collaborating across various sciences including molecular genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, epigenetics, metabolomics, phenomics, molecular biology, cell biology, physiology, and biophysics.     Our research seeks to better understand the wine-making process and how it can be manipulated to improve wine quality. With expertise in wine microbiology, biochemistry, sensory & consumer science, and wine quality measurements, we work along the whole winemaking process from grape to glass. Innovative research that links food, nutrition and sustainable agriculture to improve human health translates into food products with real health outcomes. Improvements in nutritional status of human populations can optimise health outcomes, benefiting quality of life and reducing whole-of-life health care costs Research Strengths:

    Project Description:

    Our scientists explore how flora and fauna respond to environmental challenges and climate change and seek to understand the adaptive capacity and resilience of species. We use analytical and applied techniques to study wildlife conservation and biosecurity risk management; monitor ecosystems with satellite imagery and use GIS and spatial simulation modelling to forecasts of biodiversity shifts to conserve natural systems. Our mMarine biology and aquatic research has a strong focus on current environmental issues that affect freshwater, estuarine and marine ecosystems,. while exploring the ecological history of underwater communities. We contribute to improving human health by exploring the relationship between biodiversity and infectious and chronic diseases, including water quality for human and environmental health.

    Project Description:

    Research at the department of Earth Sciences focusses on : - exploring how the planet works, from deep time plate tectonics to the evolution of continents. - studying the resource endowment of Australia and the planet. - investigating the evolution of life and the climate. We offer projects associated with our main research strengths in:
    - mineral exploration (including `critical minerals`)
    - tectonics and geomechanics
    - metamorphic petrology and geochemistry
    - geo-, thermo- and petrochronology
    - isotope geochemistry (including metal isotopes)
    - optical stimulated luminescence dating for palaeontology
    - palaeoclimatology and biogeochemistry
    - magnetotellurics, heat production and heat flow studies

    Funding Information:

    The department of Earth Science is part of the $218M Mineral Exploration Cooperative Research Centre, which is the world's largest mineral exploration collaboration, providing research support for 10 years until 2029. Additonal funding that is currently available comes from Australian Research Council research grants, such as Discovery projects on `crustal growth` and `the East Asian Monsoon` and a Linkage project on `rare earth mineral resources`
